Why Is This Night Different from All Other Nights?

Costa Rica, April 16, 2003— In Costa Rica this year, the traditional Passover question has an unusual answer. Chef to the stars, Akasha Richmond, is flying in from Los Angeles to cook a one-of-a-kind Passover feast at Luna Nueva, a 74-acre organic ginger and turmeric estate nestled on the edge of the pristine Children’s Rain Forest and the Arenal volcano.

The farm, owned by New Chapter, Inc., of Brattleboro, Vermont, U.S.A., has been lauded by OCIA as a model of organic sustainable rainforest agriculture. The intertwining of cultures, sauces and liberation themes for Passover 2003 is the idea of New Chapter principals, Tom Newmark and Paul Schulick. They believe that in these times of ecological peril, global warming and GMO that biodiversity, permaculture and biodynamic practices must be included in the Passover message.

“Passover is a celebration of thanksgiving for the abundant blessings and protection bestowed by the Divine. With the industrial, scientific and technological revolutions of the past century, mankind has made many advances but we’ve also turned our back on nature’s intelligence and have thereby put life on the planet at risk,” says New Chapter President Tom Newmark.

“At Luna Nueva we are committed to supporting and protecting the environment at every stage of production. We believe that using sustainable organic agriculture and working fairly and harmoniously with indigenous cultures are essential in creating our vital whole food supplements and corporate profitability.”

New Chapter has been called “the Ben & Jerry’s” of the natural supplement industry. Their products are all premium grade organic whole foods-based, not synthetic. Their herbs are extracted through an innovative supercritical process, which they introduced to the U.S. from Germany. No harmful chemical isolates or solvents are used in extraction.

New Chapter’s founder and CEO Paul Schulick is a renowned herbal researcher, lecturer and formulator for more than 20 years. His book, Ginger—Common Spice and Wonder Drug (Hohm Publishing), is considered the definitive popular title on ginger. Newmark and Schulick have co-authored The Life Bridge and also Beyond Aspirin, which has inspired research on New Chapter’s COX-2 inhibitor Zyflamend at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic and other medical institutions worldwide.

Akasha Richmond has been catering parties and events in Los Angeles since 1985. She brings her knowledge of foods that heal to everything she creates and to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Some of her favorite experiences include: catering a Karl Lagerfeld photo shoot for Pierce Brosnan, catering events at the Sundance Film Festival, and working as a private chef for Barbra Streisand. She has cooked holiday dinners for Billy Bob Thornton, dinner parties for Al Pacino; photo shoots for Richard Gere and served soy cappuccinos backstage at the Grammy’s. She recently catered the Sunset Marquis Oasis Oscar Wellness Suite, serving all organic food with an elixir bar featuring New Chapter’s Volcanic Organic Ginger Tonics.
