Iberogast | Digestive Relief with Iberis Amara (Clown's Mustard)
Iberogast with Iberis Amara (Clown’s Mustard)
Iberogast with iberis amara (also known as clown’s mustard) is a prokinetic tincture comprised of nine different herbs. These herbs are Iberis amara, Angelica, Chamomile, Caraway fruit, St. Mary’s Thistle, Balm leaves, Peppermint leaves, Celandine, and Liquorice root. It is specially formulated for the purpose of relieving irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and dyspepsia. Iberogast was created in 1961 in Germany and is available without prescription.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Approximately 10-20 percent of people suffer from the uncomfortable and sometimes painful condition of irritable bowel syndrome. IBS is usually characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits including constipation and diarrhea. IBS can sometimes be induced by an infection or a stressful life event. There is not a cure for IBS. However, there are some treatment methods such as certain medications, alterations in diet, and even psychological intervention that have proven to help relieve symptoms of IBS. Iberogast with iberis amara is one such treatment that has been found to significantly reduce the pain and symptoms associated with IBS.
Dyspepsia
Dyspepsia is a common and painful condition affecting the upper digestive tract. Chronic or recurrent pain in the upper abdomen are common with dyspepsia as well as feeling full earlier than expected when eating. Dyspepsia can be accompanied by bloating, belching, nausea or heartburn. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis are often the culprits of dyspepsia. There are few treatment options found to be truly effective at relieving the discomfort associated with dyspepsia.
Iberogast was analyzed in 2004 during three, double-blind placebo-controlled studies. The data from the studies found Iberogast to be significantly more effective than placebo (p value = 0.001) at treating patients with functional dyspepsia. Iberogast demonstrated itself to be equivalent to cisapride and vastly superior to metochlopramide at reducing the symptoms of functional dyspepsia over a four week period. Retrospective surveillance of 40,961 children (12 years and under) found no serious side-effects.
How Does Iberogast Work?
The herbs in Iberogast work in a regulating way on the gastrointestinal tract. The key ingredient of Iberogast, iberis amara, promotes tone and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Iberogast accelerates the emptying of the digestive system. It has been found to reduce pain and cramping in the intestines. Iberogast works to relieve heartburn. Finally, it reduces bloating by inducing the release of gas from the lower gastrointestinal tract.

It is usually recommended to take Iberogast 3 times daily with meals.
