Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body and is particularly concentrated in the connective tissues such as the skin, heart valve, and cartilage. Specifically, it is a polysaccharide composed of alternating molecules of N-acetyl glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid as an Anti-inflammatory

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan with anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous properties. One study revealed that swelling and inflammation was dramatically reduced when liquid, topical hyaluronic acid was applied to the site of inflammation. How does hyaluronic acid work to reduce inflammation so effectively? Leukocytes are sent directly to the site of trauma to gather and clean up the site of injury. Often times, the body overreacts and sends too many leukocytes to the site of trauma. The consequence is swelling and pain. Research has shown that hyaluronic acid slows the movement of leukocytes and affects neutraphil adhesion within blood vessels. Glycoprotein resides on the surface of leukocytes as well as on the endothelial lining of blood vessels. Glycoprotein binds hyaluronic acid molecules. If hyaluronic acid is in excess, it will block the binding sites of the leukocytes and the endothelium. The result of this process is that the rolling action of the leukocyte through the blood vessels is diminished. Consequently, fewer white blood cells are sent to the site of inflammation and the surrounding tissues and pain and swelling is significantly reduced.

Hyaluronic Acid and Joint Health

Hyaluronic acid has been shown to decrease pain and improve mobility in patients suffering from osteoarthritis. The improvement in joint condition is due to alterations in the synovial fluid viscoelasticity, cartilage metabolism, and level of inflammation. Hyaluronic acid keeps the joints lubricated and increases moisture retention in the connective tissue so that the joint is more cushioned and supported.

Dosage

Absorption of hyaluronic acid in the digestive tract was almost impossible in the past due to its heavy molecular weight. However, an enzyme-cleaving technique has been developed to break down hyaluronic acid into polymers with a lighter molecular weight. Consequently, hyaluronic acid can be absorbed easily in the digestive tract when taken orally. Usually, 10-150 mgs of hyaluronic acid is normally metabolized or excreted daily. The rate of loss is higher in people over the age of 50. Therefore, supplementation should begin with a 50mg capsule 3 times daily to maintain balance.

Side Effects

Hyaluronic acid is usually well-tolerated. Very few side effects have been noted and it is largely considered a safe supplement. However, rare side effects of hyaluronic acid include skin rash, bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching. Hyaluronic acid gel should not be used in patients who suffer from severe allergies. Always consult your physician before taking any new supplements or medication.
